Katoomba is the vibrant heart of the Blue Mountains, a town that balances dramatic escarpment views with a lively arts and café scene. The air smells of eucalyptus, and the mist often rolls over the Jamison Valley, giving the place a moody, atmospheric charm. This is where you come for jaw-dropping lookouts, world-class bushwalks, and a dose of mountain culture.
Highlights & What to See
- Three Sisters – The iconic sandstone formation at Echo Point. Arrive early to catch the sunrise or late afternoon for golden light and fewer crowds.
- Scenic World – Ride the steepest passenger railway in the world (Scenic Railway), glide over the valley on the Scenic Skyway, or walk the elevated boardwalk through ancient rainforest.
- Giant Stairway & The Federal Pass – Descend the 900-plus steps of the Giant Stairway for an immersive hike into the valley floor, connecting to trails past waterfalls and lush gullies.
- Katoomba Cascades & Leura Forest – A quieter walk that delivers tumbling cascades and fern-filled gullies, perfect for a peaceful afternoon.
- Echo Point Lookout – The classic panoramic view of the Three Sisters and the Jamison Valley. Also a great spot for a picnic with a view.
- Katoomba's Main Street & Art Galleries – Browse vintage shops, Aboriginal art galleries, and the Carrington Hotel, a grand 19th-century relic with a great Sunday roast.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two days is ideal: spend one day on the main highlights (Three Sisters, Scenic World, and a short walk), and a second exploring deeper trails like the National Pass or visiting nearby Leura. If you only have a day, combine a morning at Scenic World with an afternoon walk to the Three Sisters and a coffee on the main street. Katoomba also works well as an overnight stop on a Sydney–Blue Mountains road trip.
