Hinchinbrook Island, a rugged gem off the coast of Far North Queensland, is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. This largely untouched island is dominated by the soaring peaks of the Hinchinbrook Channel and lush rainforests that meet pristine beaches. With no permanent residents and limited development, it offers a true wilderness experience that feels a world away from the bustling cities.
Highlights & What to See
- Thorsborne Trail – One of Australia's great multi-day hikes, this 32 km track winds through ancient rainforest, past cascading waterfalls, and along isolated beaches. It's a challenging but rewarding journey that requires permits and self-sufficiency.
- Hinchinbrook Channel – Explore this vast estuary by kayak or boat, where you can spot crocodiles, birdlife, and lush mangroves. The calm waters are perfect for a serene paddle.
- Zoe Bay – A stunning white-sand beach with a backdrop of dense rainforest. The short walk from the campsite leads to a refreshing waterfall and swimming hole.
- Mount Bowen – The island's highest peak offers panoramic views over the channel and mainland. It's a tough scramble, best attempted by experienced bushwalkers.
- Wildlife Encounters – Keep an eye out for agile wallabies, goannas, and a rich variety of birds. The waters around the island are home to dolphins and sea turtles.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 3–4 days tackling the Thorsborne Trail, which allows for a comfortable pace with time to swim and explore side tracks. If you prefer a shorter visit, a day trip from Cardwell by water taxi can give you a taste of the island's beauty, but for the full experience, plan an overnight stay. The best time to visit is during the dry season (May to October) when the weather is cooler and leeches are less active.
