Rising from the middle of Sydney Harbour, Fort Denison is a tiny island fortress that packs a hefty dose of colonial history and panoramic harbour views. Originally a rocky outcrop used by the Eora people for fishing, it was later fortified by convicts in the 1840s to defend against a feared Russian invasion. Today, it’s a peaceful escape from the city buzz, where you can explore the intact Martello tower, cannon emplacements, and a museum that tells the story of Sydney’s early defences. The ferry ride over is a mini cruise in itself, offering stunning skyline vistas.
Highlights & What to See
- Martello Tower – Australia’s only remaining Martello tower, a squat stone fortification with walls over 3 metres thick. Climb to the top for 360-degree harbour views.
- Daily Gun Firing – At 1pm sharp, a historic cannon is fired (a tradition dating back to 1906). It’s a thunderous reminder of the island’s military past.
- Fort Denison Museum – Housed in the former barracks, this small museum displays artefacts from the island’s convict and defence eras, including original firearms and models.
- Harbour Panoramas – From the tower, gaze across to the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and the lush shores of the Royal Botanic Garden. Perfect for photography.
- Guided Tour – Join a ranger-led tour to hear stories of convict labour, the 1942 Japanese submarine attack (a shell hit the fort’s base), and the island’s role as a prison.
