Dorrigo is a lush, high-altitude town on the New South Wales north coast, where ancient Gondwana rainforests meet cascading waterfalls and misty mountain air. This serene escape is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, offering travellers a chance to walk among towering brush box and Antarctic beech trees. The town itself has a laid-back, creative community with a handful of cosy cafes and craft shops, making it a perfect stop for nature lovers and those seeking a tranquil detour off the Pacific Highway.
Highlights & What to See
- Dorrigo National Park – The star attraction. Walk the famous Skywalk, a raised boardwalk that glides through the rainforest canopy, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the lush greenery and, on clear days, the distant coast.
- Dangar Falls – A thunderous 30-metre waterfall just a short drive from town. There’s a viewing platform and a walking track down to the base for a refreshing mist-up.
- Crystal Shower Falls – A stunning waterfall you can walk behind, accessed via a short rainforest loop from the park’s main centre. The fern-lined trail is magical after rain.
- Dorrigo Rainforest Centre – A great starting point for your visit, with interactive displays on the region’s unique flora, fauna, and Aboriginal heritage.
- Dorrigo Vintage & Collectables – Browse the town’s quirky antique shops and local art galleries for handmade souvenirs and retro finds.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find a full day allows you to explore the national park’s key walks (allow 2–3 hours for the Skywalk and Crystal Shower loop), visit Dangar Falls, and enjoy a leisurely lunch in town. If you’re keen on longer hikes, such as the 6.5 km Wonga Walk, consider staying overnight. Dorrigo is also a rewarding stop for a half-day if you’re driving between Coffs Harbour and the Northern Rivers, but the serene atmosphere invites you to linger longer.
