Perched high in the cool, misty Dandenong Ranges, this botanic garden (formerly the National Rhododendron Gardens) is a serene escape from Melbourne's urban bustle. Sprawling across 104 acres, the garden bursts into a riot of colour in spring and autumn, with thousands of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and cherry blossoms. Meandering paths lead through towering tree ferns, tranquil lakes and manicured lawns, all set against the backdrop of the forested hills. It's a place for slow strolls, picnics and breathing in the crisp mountain air.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow at least 2–3 hours to explore the main loops and soak up the atmosphere. If you're a keen gardener or photographer, plan for half a day – pack a picnic to enjoy at one of the many benches or picnic tables. The garden is easily combined with a morning at the nearby SkyHigh Mount Dandenong lookout or a leisurely lunch in Olinda or Sassafras.
