Crescent Head is a laid-back coastal village on the Mid North Coast of NSW, renowned for its world-class point break and mellow, surf-town vibe. The headland itself — a rocky outcrop shaped like a crescent — shelters a sweeping beach of golden sand and forms the backdrop for one of Australia’s longest right-hand point breaks. Beyond the surf, this is a place to slow down, breathe in the salt air, and explore a landscape of national park, coastal lagoons, and quiet bushwalks.
Highlights & What to See
- Surf the Point Break — Crescent Head’s iconic right-hander peels for up to 300 metres on a good swell. It’s a long, forgiving wave that suits all levels, though localism can be strong; be respectful and wait your turn.
- Crescent Head Beach — The main beach stretches for kilometres, with gentle waves and plenty of space. It’s patrolled in summer and perfect for swimming, bodyboarding, or just walking the length of the sand.
- Killick Creek — This coastal lagoon at the southern end of the beach is a calm spot for kayaking, paddleboarding, and birdwatching. The creek mouth changes with the tides, often creating a shallow, warm pool for kids.
- Goolawah National Park — A short drive north, this park protects coastal heath, wetlands, and the mouth of the Macleay River. Walk to the historic Goolawah lighthouse ruins or explore the dunes and fishing spots.
- Hat Head National Park — Just south of Crescent Head, this park offers dramatic sea cliffs, coastal walks, and the isolated Smoky Cape Lighthouse. The walk from Hungry Gate to Gap Beach is a highlight.
- Local Cafes & Markets — Grab a coffee at the General Store or a fish and chips from the takeaway joint. The Crescent Head Country Market (third Sunday of the month) has local produce and crafts.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least two full days to soak up the surf and scenery. Spend the first day on the beach and exploring the headland walk (a 30-minute loop with panoramic views). Dedicate the second day to a visit to Goolawah or Hat Head National Park for a longer walk or a picnic. If you’re a keen surfer, you could easily stretch to three or four days, especially if the swell is running. Crescent Head is compact enough to navigate on foot or by bike, so you won’t waste time in traffic.
