Perched on the edge of the Warrumbungle National Park, Coonabarabran is the self-proclaimed ‘Astronomy Capital of Australia’ and a gateway to some of the darkest skies in the state. This laid-back country town offers a rare blend of dramatic volcanic landscapes, world-class stargazing, and genuine outback hospitality. Whether you’re peering through a telescope at the Australian Astronomical Observatory or hiking ancient lava flows, Coonabarabran feels like a discovery waiting to happen.
Highlights & What to See
- Warrumbungle National Park: A hiker’s paradise of volcanic spires and craters. The Breadknife and Grand High Tops walk is a must-do for panoramic views. The park is also an International Dark Sky Park – stay for sunset and see the Milky Way.
- Australian Astronomical Observatory (AAO) Visitor Centre: Get a behind-the-scenes look at one of the country’s major research observatories. The free exhibits explain how astronomers study the cosmos, and guided tours (weekdays) let you see the giant Anglo-Australian Telescope up close.
- Skywatch Observatory: For a more hands-on stargazing experience, join a small-group session with local astronomers. The clear, unpolluted skies here reveal constellations, planets, and even distant galaxies.
- Crystal Kingdom: A quirky but fascinating museum showcasing a massive collection of minerals, fossils, and gemstones. Kids and geology buffs will love the dinosaur footprints and the glow-in-the-dark mineral room.
- Siding Spring Observatory: Perched on a nearby mountain, this research facility houses several telescopes. The visitor centre offers interactive displays, and the drive up rewards you with sweeping views over the Warrumbungles.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to experience both the national park and the astronomy scene. Spend day one hiking in Warrumbungle National Park, then enjoy an evening stargazing tour. On day two, visit the AAO and Siding Spring Observatories, and perhaps squeeze in Crystal Kingdom. If you’re short on time, a single overnight stop allows for a sunset walk and a night under the stars.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Gilgandra: Famous for its windmill and the Coo-ee March history, a good pit stop on the way to Dubbo – 45 minutes south.
- Warrumbungle National Park: You’re already here, but it’s worth emphasising that the park itself deserves at least a full day of exploration.
