Perched on the southern headland of the Shoalhaven River, Coolangatta is a serene coastal escape that feels a world away from the bustle of Sydney, yet lies just two hours south. This tiny village is steeped in history as the site of one of Australia’s earliest European settlements, and today it offers a blend of heritage charm, pristine beaches, and lush bushland. The Coolangatta Estate, with its historic buildings and award-winning winery, forms the heart of the area, while the surrounding national park and river provide endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. Whether you’re sipping a cool-climate wine overlooking the ocean or exploring the rugged headland, Coolangatta rewards those who take the time to slow down and soak in its quiet beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Coolangatta Estate – Wander through the convict-built sandstone buildings, including the original 1822 homestead, and taste the estate’s acclaimed semillon and shiraz at the cellar door. The on-site café serves excellent produce-driven lunches with views over the vineyards.
- Seven Mile Beach National Park – Stretching north from Coolangatta, this wild beach is perfect for long walks, birdwatching, and spotting kangaroos at dawn. The park’s coastal heath is ablaze with wildflowers in spring.
- Shoalhaven River Cruise – Join a guided kayak or boat tour to explore the river’s mangrove forests and spot pelicans, sea eagles, and maybe even a dolphin. The river mouth is a favourite for fishing and crabbing.
- Coolangatta Mountain Walk – A steep but rewarding 2.5 km trail climbs to the summit of Mount Coolangatta, offering panoramic views across the Shoalhaven delta and out to the Pacific Ocean. Look for the remains of the old signal station at the top.
- Berry & Shoalhaven Heads – Just a short drive north, the historic town of Berry is a must for its antique shops, bakeries, and the famous Berry Donut Van. Shoalhaven Heads, at the northern end of Seven Mile Beach, has a relaxed pub with river views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Coolangatta is best enjoyed over a relaxed day trip from Sydney or as an overnight stop. If you’re driving from Sydney (about 2 hours), plan to arrive by late morning to explore the estate, take a short walk, and have lunch at the café. For a deeper experience, stay one night at the estate’s heritage cottages or the nearby B&Bs, allowing time for a kayak tour and a sunset walk on Seven Mile Beach. A weekend gives you the chance to also explore Berry and the national park at a leisurely pace.
