Flowing through lush farmland and ancient rainforest, the Clarence River Valley is the Northern Rivers' watery spine – a laid-back region where you can swim in crystal-clear river pools, pick your own blueberries, and explore historic villages that feel frozen in time. This is a place for slow travel: pack a picnic, hire a kayak, and let the current guide your day.
Highlights & What to See
- Clarence River itself – canoe or kayak past dairy farms and national park; look for sea eagles and platypuses in the quieter upper reaches.
- Ulmarra – a photogenic heritage village with a classic pub, antique shops, and a lovely riverside park for a lunch stop.
- Grafton – the valley's main town, famous for its jacaranda trees (blooming October–November) and the grand South Grafton Rail Bridge.
- Yamba – at the river mouth, this coastal gem offers surf beaches, a working lighthouse, and excellent seafood at the Yamba Fishermen's Co-op.
- Bundjalung National Park – walk through coastal heath and littoral rainforest to remote beaches; the Iluka–Woody Head walk is a standout.
- Pick-your-own farms – seasonal berries, stone fruit, and pecans; check farm gates for honesty boxes and u-pick days.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the valley at least three days to do it justice. Spend one day exploring Grafton and the upper river (canoeing or a scenic drive), one day in the lower valley around Ulmarra and the coast, and a final day at Yamba with a walk in Bundjalung National Park. If you're on a road trip between Sydney and Brisbane, two days is enough for a taste – but you'll want to linger.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Northern Rivers Hinterland – just west, the rainforest villages of Dorrigo and Bellingen offer waterfalls, national parks, and a thriving arts scene.
- Byron Bay & Hinterland – an hour south, Byron's beaches and the foodie town of Bangalow are easy add-ons.
- Coffs Coast – south of the valley, with the Solitary Islands Coastal Walk and the Big Banana.
- Wooli & Yuraygir National Park – a stunning stretch of wild beaches and coastal lagoons, perfect for a quiet detour.
- Richmond Valley – the nearby towns of Casino and Kyogle offer more rural character and access to Toonumbar National Park.
