Central Coast Wine Trail
Just an hour north of Sydney, the Central Coast Wine Trail rolls through a landscape of eucalyptus-dotted hills and narrow valleys where boutique wineries produce cool-climate wines with a relaxed, unhurried charm. Unlike the polished cellar doors of the Hunter Valley, this trail feels refreshingly off-the-beaten-path — think rustic tasting rooms, vineyard dogs, and winemakers who pour you a glass and chat about the season. The region specialises in Semillon, Verdelho, and Shiraz, but you’ll also find a handful of craft breweries and distilleries along the way, making it an ideal day trip or weekend loop for anyone who loves good wine without the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Wine House & Wildflower Gin – A winery and distillery combo where you can taste their signature Verdelho and a native-inspired gin infused with lemon myrtle and pepperberry. The cellar door overlooks a dam and paddocks, perfect for a lazy afternoon.
- Six String Brewing Co. – Not wine, but a must-stop for craft beer lovers. Their taproom in Erina pours hoppy pale ales and rich stouts, with a sunny beer garden that often hosts live music.
- Mt Penang Parklands – A sprawling green space with walking trails, a Japanese garden, and a playground. Pack a picnic from the nearby wineries and spend an hour here between tastings.
- Karuah River Oysters – Just a short detour, this family-run oyster farm shuckles fresh Sydney rock oysters on the spot. Pair a dozen with a chilled Semillon from the trail.
- Gosford Regional Gallery – A peaceful stop with rotating art exhibitions and a lovely café. The surrounding Edogawa Commemorative Garden is a serene spot for a stroll.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least a full day to explore the trail comfortably. Start mid-morning at a couple of cellar doors, break for lunch at a winery café or brewery, then visit two or three more producers in the afternoon. If you want to add the oyster farm or Mt Penang Parklands, extend the day by a few hours. Overnighters can base themselves in Terrigal or Gosford and spread the trail over two relaxed days.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Terrigal – A lively beach town with a surf-friendly break, coastal walks, and a buzzing esplanade of cafés and restaurants. Great for a post-wine swim.
- Avoca Beach – Quieter than Terrigal, with a beautiful rock pool and a laid-back village vibe. Perfect for a morning walk before the wineries open.
- Bouddi National Park – Dramatic coastal cliffs, hidden beaches, and the Bouddi Coastal Walk. A half-day hike here pairs beautifully with a wine-tasting afternoon.
- The Entrance – A family-friendly spot where the Tuggerah Lake meets the sea, known for its nightly pelican feeding and long sandy beach.
- Hunter Valley – If you have more time, continue north to Australia’s most famous wine region. The Central Coast Wine Trail makes a great warm-up before the big vineyards.
