Brunswick Heads Beach is a laid-back coastal gem just north of Byron Bay, where the Brunswick River meets the Tasman Sea. With its protected swimming lagoon, consistent surf breaks, and a relaxed village atmosphere, it's a favourite for families, surfers, and anyone craving a classic NSW north-coast beach day without the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Protected swimming lagoon: The river mouth creates a calm, shallow lagoon perfect for kids and less confident swimmers, especially at low tide.
- Surf breaks for all levels: The main beach offers beach breaks suitable for intermediates, while the river mouth can produce longer rides for more experienced surfers.
- Brunswick River walk: Follow the foreshore path along the river to spot pelicans, stingrays, and the occasional dolphin – a lovely short stroll any time of day.
- Torakina Reserve: A grassy park right behind the beach with picnic tables, barbecues, and a playground, making it easy to spend the whole day.
- Brunswick Heads village: Just a few minutes' walk, the village has a handful of excellent cafes, a brewery, and a general store – grab a coffee and a bacon-and-egg roll for breakfast.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can easily fill a full day here: arrive mid-morning, swim and surf before lunch, enjoy a picnic or café lunch, then relax on the sand or explore the river walk in the afternoon. If you're short on time, a couple of hours for a swim and a stroll through the village is still worthwhile. For a more immersive experience, consider staying overnight in one of the nearby holiday parks or B&Bs.
