Broulee is a sleepy coastal hamlet on the NSW South Coast, where the laid-back vibe is matched only by the natural beauty. With its protected bay, surf breaks, and a headland walk that delivers panoramic ocean views, it's the kind of place where you kick off your shoes and forget the time. The village itself is tiny – a general store, a surf club, and a handful of holiday houses – but the real draw is the raw, untamed coastline.
Highlights & What to See
- Broulee Surf Beach: A consistent right-hand point break that draws surfers from far and wide. Even if you don't surf, the beach is a beauty – soft sand, clear water, and rarely crowded.
- Broulee Island Nature Reserve: Accessible via a tombolo at low tide, this small island offers a short walking track with stunning views over the bay and out to sea. Keep an eye out for sea eagles and migrating whales (May–November).
- Broulee Headland Walk: A 2km loop from the Surf Beach car park that takes you along the headland, past rock platforms and through coastal heath. The views over Broulee Beach and Mossy Point are spectacular at sunset.
- Mossy Point: Just south of Broulee, this quieter beach has a small boat harbour and is a great spot for a paddle or a fish from the rocks. The Mossy Point Café is a local favourite for coffee and fish and chips.
- Tomakin River & Candlagan Creek: Perfect for a gentle kayak or stand-up paddleboard – the calm, shallow waters are ideal for beginners and families. You might spot stingrays and pelicans.
Suggested Time to Spend
Broulee is a classic two-night stopover. Arrive in the afternoon, walk the headland for sunset, and spend the next full day exploring the beaches and island. If you're a surfer, you'll want to stay longer – the point break can be world-class. For a quick taste, a few hours is enough to do the headland walk and dip your toes in the surf. It's best visited as part of a longer South Coast road trip between Batemans Bay and Narooma.
