Stretching roughly 8.5 kilometres between Putty Beach and MacMasters Beach, the Bouddi Coastal Walk is a magnificent day hike that encapsulates the raw beauty of the New South Wales Central Coast. This track weaves through Bouddi National Park, treating walkers to dramatic sea cliffs, secluded coves, and ancient eucalypt forests. With the constant soundtrack of crashing waves and the scent of saltbush, it's an invigorating journey that rewards every step with postcard-perfect views. The well-maintained path is suitable for moderately fit walkers, and the abundance of lookouts makes it easy to pause and soak in the panorama.
Highlights & What to See
- Putty Beach to Gerrin Point: The first section offers sweeping views of the coastline and the chance to spot dolphins or whales during migration (May–November).
- Maitland Bay and the wreck of the SS Maitland: A short detour leads to the historic shipwreck site, visible at low tide, and a lovely sandy beach perfect for a dip.
- Bouddi National Park Aboriginal heritage: Look for midden sites and rock engravings that speak to the area's significance to the Darkinjung and Guringai peoples.
- Gerrin Point Lookout: The highest point on the walk, offering a breathtaking 360-degree view over the ocean and hinterland.
- Little Beach: A sheltered cove with calm waters, ideal for snorkelling or a peaceful picnic stop.
- MacMasters Beach: The walk's endpoint, a patrolled surf beach with a lively café scene and a great spot to reward yourself with fish and chips.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers complete the full one-way journey in 3–4 hours, depending on how many stops you make for photos, swims, and snacks. If you want a leisurely day, allow 5–6 hours to fully explore side trails and enjoy the beaches. Many people opt to do the walk one-way and arrange a car shuffle or use the local bus service – plan your transport in advance. For a shorter outing, the section from Putty Beach to Maitland Bay (about 2 hours return) is a fantastic taster.
