Botany Bay National Park is a stunning coastal reserve on the northern shores of Botany Bay, offering a blend of Aboriginal heritage, colonial history, and natural beauty. With its dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches, and panoramic ocean views, it's a perfect escape from Sydney's hustle. The park is divided into two main areas: La Perouse on the northern headland and Kurnell on the southern peninsula, each with its own distinct character.
Highlights & What to See
- La Perouse Museum & Bare Island Fort – Explore the historic fort and museum dedicated to the French explorer Lapérouse, with guided tours of the 1880s fortification.
- Kurnell's Captain Cook Landing Place – Visit the site where James Cook first set foot in Australia in 1770, with interpretive signs and a monument.
- Cruwee & Congwong Beaches – Swim and snorkel at these calm, sheltered beaches within La Perouse, popular with locals.
- Cape Baily Walking Track – A 4.5 km coastal walk from Kurnell offering spectacular cliff views, whale watching (May–November), and wildflowers in spring.
- Aboriginal Engravings & Midden Sites – Discover ancient rock carvings and shell middens at Kurnell, evidence of the Gweagal people's long connection to this land.
- Snorkelling at Bare Island – The waters around Bare Island are a marine protected area, teeming with fish, rays, and occasional seals.
Suggested Time to Spend
A full day is ideal to explore both sides of the park. Start at La Perouse in the morning to visit the museum and fort, then walk the coastal track. After lunch, drive across to Kurnell (15 minutes) for the Cape Baily walk and a swim at Silver Beach. If time is short, half a day is enough to focus on one side – La Perouse for history and snorkelling, or Kurnell for walking and Cook's landing site.
