Ballina is a relaxed coastal town at the mouth of the Richmond River, where the subtropical hinterland meets the Pacific. It's a gateway to the Northern Rivers region, known for its long sandy beaches, big prawns (the iconic Big Prawn landmark), and a laid-back vibe that makes it a perfect stop on a Sydney-to-Brisbane road trip. The town has a strong surf culture, excellent seafood, and easy access to national parks and whale-watching spots.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Ballina deserves at least a full day to explore its beaches and main attractions, but two nights allows you to relax and also take a day trip to Byron Bay (30 minutes south) or the hinterland. If you're driving between Sydney and Brisbane, an overnight stop here breaks the journey perfectly. Mornings are best for beach walks and coffee; afternoons for river cruises or a surf lesson.
