Just south of South West Rocks on the New South Wales mid-north coast, Arakoon National Park is a compact but captivating slice of coastal wilderness. This pocket-sized park packs in dramatic headlands, quiet beaches, and a rich convict history, making it a rewarding stop for nature lovers and history buffs alike. The park's centrepiece is the historic Trial Bay Gaol, a striking sandstone ruin that overlooks the azure waters of Trial Bay. With easy walking trails and excellent swimming spots, it's the kind of place where you can spend a morning exploring, then laze on the sand come afternoon.
Highlights & What to See
- Trial Bay Gaol: This 19th-century prison, built by convicts, sits dramatically on the headland. Wander its eerie corridors and learn about its role in housing German internees during WWI. The views over the bay are spectacular.
- Trial Bay: A sheltered, patrolled beach perfect for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The calm waters and sandy shore make it a family favourite.
- Laggers Point: A short walk from the gaol leads to this lookout, where you can spot whales during migration season (May–November) and enjoy panoramic coastal vistas.
- Front Beach & Back Beach: Two contrasting beaches – Front Beach is popular for swimming, while Back Beach is more exposed and great for a wild walk.
- Walking Tracks: The park has several short trails, including the 1.5 km Arakoon Walk that connects the gaol to the beaches, winding through coastal heath and providing excellent birdwatching.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day exploring the park – enough time to tour the gaol, walk to Laggers Point, and enjoy a swim at Trial Bay. If you want to hike all the trails and relax on the beach, plan for a full day. The park is compact, so you can easily combine it with a visit to the nearby town of South West Rocks for lunch or an overnight stay.
