Wyangala Dam, a vast water storage on the Lachlan River about 70km west of Cowra, is a surprising inland oasis in New South Wales. The dam’s turquoise waters against the dry, golden hills create a striking landscape that feels a world away from the coast. It’s a favourite for water sports, fishing, and camping, offering a genuine slice of Australian outback life with all the modern comforts for a self-drive adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Water sports paradise: Skiing, wakeboarding, and kayaking on the expansive, calm waters are the main draw. The dam has several boat ramps and a dedicated ski area.
- Fishing hotspot: Cast a line for Murray cod, golden perch, and trout. The fishing is excellent year-round, with plenty of quiet coves to try your luck.
- Wyangala Dam Wall: Walk or drive across the impressive concrete wall for panoramic views of the lake and the Lachlan Valley. The spillway is a sight after heavy rain.
- Camping under the stars: The dam has multiple campgrounds, from basic bush sites to powered spots near the amenities block. Waking up to the sunrise over the water is unforgettable.
- Birdwatching and wildlife: Keep an eye out for kangaroos, emus, and a variety of waterbirds. The surrounding bushland is teeming with life, especially at dawn and dusk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come for a weekend or longer, as the dam is a destination in itself. A minimum of two days allows you to enjoy water activities, explore the shoreline, and relax. If you’re passing through on a road trip, a few hours to take in the view from the wall and have a picnic is worthwhile, but you’ll want to stay longer if you have a boat or fishing gear.
