In the undulating hills of the New South Wales Central West, Cowra is a town of quiet surprises. Best known for its remarkable Japanese Garden and its poignant prisoner-of-war history, Cowra offers a thoughtful blend of culture, nature, and rural charm that rewards travellers who take the time to linger.
Highlights & What to See
- Cowra Japanese Garden & Cultural Centre – A serene, five-hectare garden designed by Ken Nakajima, one of the finest Japanese gardens outside Japan. Stroll around the koi-filled lake, cross the red bridge, and pause at the tea house for matcha and a moment of calm.
- Cowra POW Camp Site & Breakout Memorial – In 1944, over 1,100 Japanese prisoners staged a mass breakout here. The memorial and interpretive trail tell this dramatic story with sensitivity; the nearby cemetery is a moving tribute to all who died.
- Australian World Peace Bell – One of only a handful of World Peace Bells in Australia, this bronze bell in the Japanese Garden symbolises Cowra's post-war reconciliation with Japan.
- Cowra Regional Art Gallery – Housed in a heritage building, this gallery showcases changing exhibitions of local and national works, often with a focus on Japanese-Australian cultural exchange.
- Lachlan River Walking Trail – Follow the river through town for a gentle walk past willow trees, birdlife, and historic bridges. It's a lovely way to stretch your legs and take in the rural setting.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to see the Japanese Garden and the POW site, but to truly appreciate Cowra's atmosphere, plan for a full day. Start at the garden in the morning when it's quiet, then visit the POW memorial and gallery after lunch. If you're driving the Central West loop, Cowra works well as an overnight stop, allowing time for a sunset stroll by the river and a relaxed dinner at one of the town's country pubs.
