Perched on the edge of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, Katoomba is the gateway to some of Australia’s most dramatic wilderness. This former coal-mining town has reinvented itself as a mountain escape, where misty valleys, sheer sandstone cliffs, and the iconic Three Sisters rock formation draw hikers, photographers, and road-trippers. The main street buzzes with vintage stores, art galleries, and cosy cafés, while the surrounding national park offers endless bushwalking trails. Whether you’re coming for the views, the fresh air, or a dose of mountain culture, Katoomba delivers a genuinely Australian high-country experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Three Sisters Lookout – The classic Blue Mountains vista, best at sunrise or late afternoon when the rock formations glow in warm light. Follow the short walk to Echo Point for the iconic photo.
- Scenic World – Ride the steepest passenger railway in the world, glide over the forest canopy on the Skyway, or stroll the elevated boardwalk through ancient rainforest. A fun, family-friendly way to experience the escarpment.
- Giant Stairway & Federal Pass – For active travellers, this steep descent down into the Jamison Valley rewards with close-up views of the Three Sisters and the chance to explore the lush valley floor.
- Katoomba Falls – A series of cascades plunging into the valley, easily accessed from a wheelchair-friendly track or via the more rugged Prince Henry Cliff Walk.
- Leura Cascades & Gordon Falls – Just a short drive south, the charming village of Leura offers manicured gardens, boutique shopping, and these beautiful waterfall lookouts.
- Norman Lindsay Gallery & Museum – The former home of the celebrated Australian artist, set in a magical garden with a café – a cultural pit stop with a bohemian vibe.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find that two full days in Katoomba hits the sweet spot. Day one can cover the main lookouts and Scenic World; day two is for a longer bushwalk – the Six Foot Track or a section of the Great Blue Mountains Trail – plus exploring the town’s cafés and antique shops. If you’re short on time, a single day from Sydney is feasible (it’s a 90-minute drive or two-hour train trip), but you’ll only scratch the surface. For a truly immersive experience, base yourself here for three days and combine walks with side trips to nearby villages.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Blackheath – 15 minutes north, offering the spectacular Govetts Leap Lookout, the Grand Canyon walk, and a handful of excellent bakeries and art galleries.
- Jenolan Caves – About an hour’s drive west, these limestone caves are a must for geology buffs and anyone wanting to see a different side of the Blue Mountains.
