Cotter Dam, a striking concrete arch dam on the Cotter River, is a scenic spot just 20 minutes from Canberra's city centre. Surrounded by bushland and part of the Cotter Reserve, it's a favourite for picnics, fishing, and short walks. The dam's history dates to the early 20th century, and its modern upgrade in 2013 created a larger reservoir that now supplies much of Canberra's water. The area offers a peaceful escape with panoramic views and a chance to spot kangaroos and birdlife.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours enjoying the lookout, a short walk, and a picnic. If you plan to fish or kayak, allow half a day. The site is compact, so it works well as a quick stop en route to Tidbinbilla or Namadgi National Park, or as a relaxed afternoon outing from Canberra.
