Cotter Dam, a striking concrete arch dam on the Cotter River, is a scenic spot just 20 minutes from Canberra's city centre. Surrounded by bushland and part of the Cotter Reserve, it's a favourite for picnics, fishing, and short walks. The dam's history dates to the early 20th century, and its modern upgrade in 2013 created a larger reservoir that now supplies much of Canberra's water. The area offers a peaceful escape with panoramic views and a chance to spot kangaroos and birdlife.
Highlights & What to See
- Cotter Dam Lookout – A short walk from the car park leads to a viewing platform with stunning vistas across the dam wall and the Murrumbidgee River valley. It's especially beautiful at sunset.
- Cotter Reserve – A grassy picnic area with barbecues, playgrounds, and shady spots by the river. Perfect for a family afternoon or a quiet lunch.
- Fishing and Kayaking – The dam is stocked with trout and Murray cod; bring your gear for a relaxed fishing session. Kayakers can explore the calm waters (own craft required).
- Walking Trails – The Cotter Dam Wall Walk (1 km return) crosses the dam and offers close-up views of the structure. The longer Bicentennial National Trail passes nearby for more adventurous hikers.
- Wildlife Watching – Keep an eye out for eastern grey kangaroos, echidnas, and a variety of waterbirds around the reservoir.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours enjoying the lookout, a short walk, and a picnic. If you plan to fish or kayak, allow half a day. The site is compact, so it works well as a quick stop en route to Tidbinbilla or Namadgi National Park, or as a relaxed afternoon outing from Canberra.
