Commonwealth Park is a sprawling green oasis on the northern shore of Lake Burley Griffin, directly opposite Parliament House. Designed by architect John Overall, the park is best known for hosting the annual Floriade festival, but year-round it offers a peaceful retreat with formal gardens, sculptures, and sweeping lake views. The park’s expansive lawns and shaded picnic spots make it a favourite for families, joggers, and anyone wanting to soak up Canberra’s outdoor lifestyle.
Highlights & What to See
- Floriade – Australia’s largest spring flower festival (September–October) transforms the park into a vibrant tapestry of tulips, daffodils, and other blooms, with themed garden beds and temporary art installations.
- Lake Burley Griffin Foreshore – The park’s waterfront path is perfect for a gentle stroll or bike ride, with iconic views of the Captain Cook Memorial Jet and the distant Black Mountain Tower.
- Sculpture Garden – Scattered throughout the park are contemporary sculptures, including the striking Birds of Australia by artist Anne Ferguson.
- Children’s Playground – A well-equipped playground with climbing frames, swings, and a sandpit, shaded by mature trees.
- Commonwealth Place – At the park’s eastern edge, this paved area features a large flagpole and a ceremonial pathway leading to the lake.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the park, which is enough to walk the main paths, admire the gardens, and enjoy a picnic. If you’re visiting during Floriade, allow at least half a day to fully appreciate the flower displays and temporary events. The park is flat and easily navigable, making it a pleasant stop on a longer Canberra itinerary.
