Wollemi National Park is a vast, rugged wilderness northwest of Sydney, part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. This is the place for true off-grid adventure: deep canyons, pagoda rock formations, ancient forests, and the famous Wollemi Pine, a prehistoric tree discovered only in 1994. With limited roads and challenging terrain, it rewards hikers, canyoneers, and birdwatchers seeking solitude and raw nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis) – A living fossil discovered deep in the park; the exact location is kept secret to protect the species, but the story and conservation efforts are fascinating.
- Glow Worm Tunnel – An abandoned railway tunnel near Newnes where thousands of glow worms create a starry ceiling; bring a torch and walk carefully.
- Pagoda Rock Formations – Surreal, layered sandstone outcrops resembling ancient temples, especially around the Gardens of Stone area (part of the park).
- Canyoning in the Wolgan and Colo Rivers – Abseil and wade through narrow, slot canyons with crystal-clear pools; a must for adventure travellers.
- Zig Zag Railway – Heritage steam train rides through the escarpment near Lithgow, offering panoramic views of the park.
- Birdwatching and Wildlife – Spot lyrebirds, wallabies, and goannas in the remote bushland.
Suggested Time to Spend
Base yourself in the Blue Mountains (Katoomba or Blackheath) for at least 2–3 days. For a day trip, focus on the Glow Worm Tunnel and a short walk at Newnes. For serious canyoning or multi-day hikes, allow 3–5 days. The park is huge and access is limited, so plan ahead and check road conditions – 4WD is recommended for some areas.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Katoomba – Hub for cafes, galleries, and the Scenic World cable cars.
