Gardens of Stone is a rugged, lesser-known national park in the Blue Mountains region that feels like a secret world carved from rock. Its name comes from the strange, pagoda-like sandstone formations that rise from the earth like ancient ruins, surrounded by pockets of lush vegetation. For travellers who crave solitude and raw landscapes beyond the tourist trail, this is a place of quiet wonder.
Highlights & What to See
- Pagoda rock formations – The park’s signature feature: eerie, layered sandstone towers that resemble miniature cities. The best examples are along the Gardens of Stone Walk and Baldy Point lookout.
- Gang Gang Lookout – A short walk leads to a cliff-edge viewpoint over the Wolgan Valley and the distant Grose Valley. Come for sunrise or sunset when the rock glows amber.
- Donkey Mountain Trail – A moderate hike through heath and scrub, rewarding you with panoramic views and close-ups of the pagodas.
- Wildflowers in spring – From August to October, the sandstone gardens are dotted with golden wattle, flannel flowers, and boronias.
- Aboriginal heritage – Look for scarred trees and rock shelters used by the Wiradjuri and Darug people; the landscape holds deep cultural significance.
Suggested Time to Spend
Devote at least half a day to explore the core walks and lookouts. If you’re keen on the longer Donkey Mountain loop or want to photograph the pagodas in the best light, plan a full day. The park is remote and has limited facilities, so bring plenty of water, snacks, and a full tank of fuel – this is not a quick stop.
