Katoomba's Scenic Railway is a heart-in-your-mouth ride down the steepest passenger railway in the world, plunging through a sandstone cliff into the ancient rainforest of the Jamison Valley. Originally built for coal mining in the 1870s, this thrilling 52-degree descent is now a must-do for adrenaline seekers and nature lovers alike. The experience combines jaw-dropping views of the Blue Mountains with a fascinating slice of industrial history.
Highlights & What to See
- The Ride Itself: Choose your angle – from a laid-back 45° to a vertigo-inducing 64° – and feel the rush as the carriage glides down into the valley. The views of the Three Sisters and Mount Solitary are spectacular.
- Rainforest Boardwalk: At the bottom, explore a network of elevated walkways through lush temperate rainforest, with ancient ferns, towering gum trees, and the occasional lyrebird. Look out for the historic coal mine entrance.
- Scenic Skyway & Cableway: Combine your ticket with the other Scenic World attractions. The Skyway offers glass-floor views 270m above the valley, while the Cableway glides up the escarpment for a different perspective.
- Walk to Katoomba Falls: From the rainforest boardwalk, a short trail leads to the base of Katoomba Falls, a multi-tiered cascade that roars after rain.
- Visitor Centre: The top station has a small museum about the railway's mining past, plus a café with panoramic views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours to fully enjoy the railway ride and the rainforest walk. If you add the Skyway or Cableway, budget at least half a day. Arrive early (before 10am) or late afternoon (after 3pm) to avoid queues, especially on weekends and school holidays. The railway runs in a loop, so you can ride down and back up, then explore the valley trails at your own pace.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Wentworth Falls: About 15 minutes south, the Wentworth Falls track leads to a stunning lookout over the valley, with a series of cascades and a natural swimming hole in summer.
- Blackheath & Govetts Leap: Further west, Blackheath offers dramatic cliff-top lookouts, including Govetts Leap and the Bridal Veil Falls, plus excellent bushwalking in the Grose Valley.
