Three Sisters
Rising from the misty Jamison Valley, the Three Sisters are the Blue Mountains' most iconic natural landmark. This trio of sandstone pillars, shaped by millennia of wind and rain, holds deep spiritual significance for the local Gundungurra and Darug peoples. Legend tells of three sisters turned to stone by a clever witch doctor to protect them from harm. Whether you catch them bathed in golden dawn light or silhouetted against a fiery sunset, the view from Echo Point is unforgettable.
Highlights & What to See
- Echo Point Lookout: The classic viewpoint offering postcard-perfect panoramas of the Three Sisters and the vast Jamison Valley. Arrive early to avoid crowds and witness the changing light.
- Giant Stairway: Descend the steep stone stairs (over 800 steps!) to walk among the sisters themselves. It's a challenging climb down and up, but the up-close perspective is worth every step.
- Scenic World: A short walk from Echo Point, this attraction offers the Scenic Railway (the steepest passenger railway in the world), the Scenic Skyway cable car, and the Scenic Walkway through ancient rainforest. Combine for a full day of mountain exploration.
- Three Sisters Walk: A gentle 45-minute return walk that takes you from Echo Point to the first sister via the Honeymoon Bridge. Perfect for a quick but immersive experience.
- Sunset & Sunrise Views: The sisters glow in shades of ochre and gold. Sunrise is quieter; sunset draws a crowd but rewards with spectacular colours over the valley.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 1–2 hours to enjoy Echo Point and the short Three Sisters Walk. If you're up for the Giant Stairway descent and a loop walk through the valley, allow 3–4 hours. To also include Scenic World rides and the nearby walks at Wentworth Falls or Katoomba, dedicate a full day. The site is easily combined with a self-drive itinerary through the Blue Mountains, with Katoomba just 5 minutes away for lunch or a coffee.
