Leura
Leafy, elegant and distinctly civilised, Leura is the Blue Mountains village that feels like a well-kept secret – a village of English-style gardens, art-deco shops and quiet streets lined with chestnut trees. It’s a place where you can spend a morning browsing galleries, an afternoon tramping through wild bushland, and an evening sipping a craft beer in a heritage pub. Leura’s charm is understated, yet it packs a punch with some of the region’s finest lookouts, gardens and café culture.
Highlights & What to See
- The Everglades House & Gardens: A stunning Art Deco estate with formal gardens that cascade down to a valley lookout. The rhododendrons and azaleas in spring are a riot of colour.
- Leura Cascades: A series of pretty waterfalls and pools just a short walk from the village. Follow the Prince Henry Cliff Walk for panoramic views that stretch to the Megalong Valley.
- Leura Mall: The village’s main street is a treasure trove of independent bookshops, boutiques, and excellent cafés. Don’t miss the Leura Garage for wood-fired pizza and local wines.
- Sublime Point Lookout: One of the most accessible and breathtaking views in the Blue Mountains. On a clear day you can see all the way to the coast.
- The Leura Toy Museum: A quirky collection of vintage toys and memorabilia that will delight children and nostalgic adults alike.
Suggested Time to Spend
Leura is perfect for a day trip from Sydney or as a relaxing overnight stop. If you’re short on time, spend the morning exploring the gardens and the mall, then a couple of hours on the Cascades walk. For a deeper experience, allow a full day to combine a garden visit (Everglades takes 2–3 hours), a bushwalk, and a leisurely lunch. Two nights would let you explore nearby Katoomba and Blackheath without rushing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Katoomba: Just 5 minutes’ drive, home to the Three Sisters, Scenic World and a vibrant arts scene.
- Blackheath: A 10-minute drive west, known for its cool-climate gardens, antique shops and the dramatic Govetts Leap Lookout.
- Wentworth Falls: 10 minutes east, with spectacular waterfall walks and the historic Conservation Hut.
- Megalong Valley: A 20-minute drive from Leura, offering horse riding, mountain biking and a taste of the wilder Blue Mountains.
- Jenolan Caves: About 1.5 hours’ drive, but worth the detour for the stunning limestone cave systems.
