Jenolan Caves
Deep in the Blue Mountains, Jenolan Caves is Australia’s most spectacular limestone cave system, a labyrinth of ancient chambers, crystal formations and underground rivers that have been drawing visitors for over a century. The drive here is an adventure in itself – winding through eucalyptus forests and past dramatic escarpments – and the caves deliver a genuine sense of discovery. Whether you’re a first-time caver or a seasoned speleologist, the sheer scale and otherworldly beauty of Jenolan will leave you awestruck.
Highlights & What to See
- Guided cave tours – choose from the easy Lucas Cave (with the stunning Cathedral Chamber), the more adventurous River Cave (with underground streams and ladders), or the family-friendly Temple of Baal.
- The Grand Arch – a colossal natural entrance that sets the scene for the caves beyond; a great spot for photos and a picnic.
- Jenolan River Walk – a short trail that follows the river through the valley, offering views of the historic Caves House and the surrounding bushland.
- Blue Lake – a vivid turquoise pool formed by mineral-rich cave waters; the colour is almost surreal, especially on a sunny day.
- Wildlife spotting – keep an eye out for lyrebirds, wallabies and even platypuses in the river pools near the camping ground.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day: allow at least 2–3 hours for a guided tour (choose one cave if you’re short on time, or two if you’re keen), plus another hour to explore the Grand Arch and Blue Lake. If you want to do two tours and walk some of the trails, plan for 5–6 hours. Overnight stays at the historic Caves House hotel are popular, giving you time for an evening wildlife walk and an early-morning cave tour before the crowds arrive.
