Grand Canyon Walk
Carved into the sandstone escarpment of the Blue Mountains, the Grand Canyon Walk is a classic bushwalk that delivers a dramatic dose of ancient rainforest, trickling waterfalls and sheer cliff faces. Despite its name, this is no arid chasm — instead, you'll descend into a lush, fern-filled gorge where moss-covered boulders and the sound of running water create an almost primordial atmosphere. It's one of the region's most rewarding short walks, offering a genuine wilderness experience just a short drive from Katoomba.
Highlights & What to See
- Narrow sandstone chasms – The trail winds through tight passages where the walls rise vertically, often dripping with moisture and covered in vibrant green moss.
- Multiple waterfalls – Depending on recent rain, you'll encounter several cascades, most notably the pretty drop at the junction with the Rodriguez Pass track.
- Ancient cycads and tree ferns – This damp, sheltered environment is home to a remnant Gondwanan rainforest, with towering cycads and soft tree ferns lining the path.
- Views across the Grose Valley – As you climb back out, lookouts offer sweeping panoramas over the valley's rugged sandstone cliffs and dense eucalypt forest.
- Seasonal wildflowers – In spring, the understorey lights up with blooms such as flannel flowers and boronias, adding splashes of colour to the green.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow around 2.5 to 3 hours to complete the 6.3-kilometre loop at a relaxed pace, including stops for photos and to soak in the scenery. Start early in the morning to avoid crowds and catch the soft light filtering through the canopy. The walk is moderately challenging with some steep sections and steps, so sturdy shoes and a bottle of water are essential. If you're short on time, you can shorten the loop by returning via the same route from the bottom of the canyon, but the full circuit is well worth the effort.
