Wilsons Promontory National Park — known affectionately as ‘The Prom’ — is Victoria’s wildest and most beloved coastal wilderness. This granite peninsula juts into Bass Strait, fringed by dazzling white-sand beaches, granite boulders, and dense forests of towering eucalypts and tree ferns. It’s a hiker’s paradise, a sanctuary for native wildlife (wombats, emus, kangaroos), and the kind of place where you can walk for hours without seeing another soul. Whether you’re day-tripping from Melbourne or embarking on a multi-day trek, The Prom delivers raw, elemental beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Squeaky Beach: A stunning stretch of quartz sand that literally squeaks underfoot; the turquoise water and sculpted granite boulders make it one of Australia’s most photogenic beaches.
- Mount Oberon Summit Walk: A moderate 3.4 km return climb rewards you with panoramic views across the promontory, coastline, and offshore islands — especially magical at sunset.
- Tidal River: The park’s hub, with a seasonal bridge over the tidal estuary; from here you can explore the boardwalk, spot fish and birds, and launch kayaks.
- Wildlife encounters: Wombats graze at dusk near Tidal River, while emus, wallabies, and echidnas are regularly seen; keep an eye out for the rare eastern ground parrot on the heathlands.
- Lilly Pilly Gully Nature Walk: An easy 1.5 km loop through lush fern gullies, ancient myrtle beeches, and towering mountain ash — a cool, green contrast to the coastal vistas.
- Prom Wildlife Walk: A longer 10.5 km circuit that takes in beaches, heathlands, and forest, offering excellent birdwatching and a chance to see the park’s iconic wombats in the wild.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves at Tidal River for at least two nights, allowing one full day for a major hike (like the Prom Summit or the Southern Circuit) and another for shorter walks and beach time. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Melbourne is doable but rushed — you’ll want a solid 10 hours to squeeze in Squeaky Beach and Mount Oberon. For serious hikers, the 3–4 day Southern Circuit (including overnight huts) is the ultimate way to experience the park’s solitude and grandeur.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Yanakie Isthmus: The gateway to The Prom, with coastal views and the Yanakie Natural Features Reserve; great for a quick stop before entering the park.
- Foster: A charming country town 30 minutes north, known for its art galleries, farmers’ market (Saturdays), and the Great Southern Rail Trail for cycling.
- Walkerville: A sleepy coastal village with a historic lime kiln, sheltered beaches, and excellent snorkelling — ideal for a quieter seaside afternoon.
- Wilsons Promontory Marine National Park: Kayak or snorkel the protected waters around the promontory; keep an eye out for dolphins, seals, and migrating whales (May–October).
- South Gippsland Hinterland: Rolling green hills, dairy farms, and the Strzelecki Ranges offer scenic drives and gourmet food trails — perfect for a road-trip loop.
