Set deep within the wilds of Wilsons Promontory National Park, Tidal River is the quintessential Victorian coastal escape. This is where the bush meets the sea in dramatic fashion—think windswept beaches, granite peaks, and a tidal estuary that gives the place its name. It's a haven for hikers, wildlife watchers, and anyone craving a genuine immersion in nature without the crowds of more commercialised beach towns.
Highlights & What to See
- Squeaky Beach: A stunning stretch of white quartz sand that literally squeaks underfoot. The turquoise water and huge granite boulders make it a photographer's dream.
- Mount Oberon Summit Walk: A 3.4 km return hike that rewards with panoramic views over the promontory, Bass Strait, and the offshore islands. Best at sunset.
- Norman Beach: The main swimming beach right at the Tidal River settlement, sheltered and patrolled in summer. Perfect for families.
- Prom Wildlife Walk: A short, easy loop where you'll likely spot wombats, emus, kangaroos, and a huge variety of birdlife—especially at dusk.
- Lilly Pilly Gully Nature Walk: A gentle rainforest stroll through ancient ferns and towering gums, with a boardwalk section over a creek.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves here for 2–4 days to truly explore the park. If you're short on time, a full day allows you to do the Mount Oberon walk, hit Squeaky Beach, and take a short wildlife walk. For a deeper experience, add a second day for longer hikes like the Tongue Point or the overnight hike to Sealer's Cove. The area is compact enough that you can change plans on a whim.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Yanakie: The gateway town just outside the park, with a general store and access to the Yanakie Isthmus walking tracks.
- Foster: A charming historic town with good cafes, a brewery, and the Great Southern Rail Trail for cycling.
- Waratah Bay: A quieter beach option with calm waters, ideal for a relaxed afternoon before or after the Prom.
- Wilsons Promontory National Park (other sections): Explore the remote northern beaches like Darby River or venture to the lighthouse at the southern tip.
