Wild Rivers Recreation Area
Wild Rivers Recreation Area, a rugged swath of Australia's Northern Territory, is a paradise for adventurers seeking raw, untamed landscapes. This vast network of rivers, gorges, and plateaus offers a glimpse into the ancient Top End, where Aboriginal rock art, thundering waterfalls, and secluded swimming holes await. It's a place to disconnect from the modern world and immerse yourself in the rhythms of the bush.
Highlights & What to See
- Florence Falls: A stunning double waterfall plunging into a deep, crystal-clear plunge pool perfect for swimming. The short walk through monsoon forest adds to the magic.
- Buley Rockholes: A series of natural rock pools connected by cascading water – ideal for a relaxing soak after a day of hiking.
- Wangi Falls: One of the most accessible and popular waterfalls, especially impressive after summer rains. The pool at its base is a favorite for a refreshing dip.
- Litchfield National Park: Though a separate park, the Wild Rivers area is often explored in conjunction with Litchfield's iconic termite mounds, magnetic termite mounds, and the Lost City sandstone formations.
- Tjaynera Falls (Sandy Creek): A less-visited waterfall offering a more secluded experience. The 4WD track and walk-in reward with a serene plunge pool.
- Aboriginal Rock Art: Scattered throughout the escarpments, ancient paintings tell stories of the region's Indigenous custodians. Look for them along walking trails or join a guided tour.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend two to three days exploring the Wild Rivers Recreation Area, allowing time to hike to several waterfalls, swim in rockholes, and enjoy the bush camping experience. If you're combining it with Litchfield National Park (which is essentially contiguous), allocate at least three to four days to cover the highlights without rushing. The best time to visit is during the dry season (May to October) when roads are passable and swimming is safe.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Daly River: A popular fishing and barramundi spot, about two hours west, with a laid-back pub and river cruises.
