Westport is a rugged coastal town on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the wild Tasman Sea meets lush rainforest and the mighty Buller River. Once a bustling gold-mining and coal port, today it's a laid-back base for exploring dramatic natural wonders, from pancake rocks and blowholes to seal colonies and ancient forests. The town itself has a frontier feel, with a handful of pubs, cafes, and a small museum that tells the story of its boom-and-bust past.
Highlights & What to See
- Punakaiki Pancake Rocks & Blowholes – A 40-minute drive north, these extraordinary limestone formations resemble stacks of pancakes, with seawater erupting through blowholes at high tide. An easy loop walk leads to the best viewpoints.
- Cape Foulwind Walkway & Seal Colony – A scenic coastal track (1.5 hours return) that passes a lively New Zealand fur seal colony. Watch pups play in rock pools and adults laze on the boulders.
- Buller Gorge Swingbridge & Jetboat – For a dose of adrenaline, cross New Zealand's longest swingbridge (110 m) and take a jetboat ride through the stunning Buller Gorge. The area also has short nature walks.
- West Coast Wilderness Trail – A world-class cycle trail that weaves through the region. The section from Westport to Greymouth (or vice versa) offers river flats, coastal views, and historic gold-mining relics.
- Buller River Kayaking & Fishing – The river is a magnet for kayakers and anglers. Calm stretches near the town are ideal for beginners, while more challenging rapids exist upstream.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day exploring the highlights around Westport, but two days allow a more relaxed pace. Arrive in the afternoon, walk the Cape Foulwind trail at sunset, then dedicate the next day to Punakaiki and a jetboat ride in the Buller Gorge. If you're cycling the Wilderness Trail, budget at least three days for the full experience.
