Reefton, the 'Town of Light', is a historic gold-mining settlement cradled by the Victoria Forest Park on New Zealand's West Coast. Its well-preserved Victorian streetscape and pioneering electrical heritage (it was the first town in the Southern Hemisphere to have a public electricity supply) give it a distinct character. Today, Reefton is a gateway to outstanding mountain-biking, tramping, and gold-panning adventures, with a friendly small-town vibe that makes it a perfect stop on a South Island road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Historic Streetscape & Heritage Walk – Stroll the main street lined with ornate wooden shopfronts and the iconic Clock Tower. The Heritage Walk reveals old miners’ cottages, churches, and the former School of Mines.
- Reefton Distilling Co. – A modern micro-distillery crafting award-winning gin and whiskey using local botanicals and West Coast water. Book a tasting to sample their small-batch spirits.
- Victoria Forest Park – New Zealand’s oldest forest park offers superb tramping (the Inland Pack Track) and mountain-biking (the Reefton Loop Trail). Gold panning is still popular in nearby creeks.
- Big River Quartz Mine – A 4WD or guided tour takes you to this historic stamping battery and mine site, set in a dramatic river gorge. It’s a tangible link to the gold rush era.
- Blackwater Gold Mine – An underground mine tour that plunges you into the dark tunnels where miners toiled. An immersive experience that brings the region’s mining history to life.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend one full day in Reefton, which is enough to explore the heritage walk, visit a distillery, and take a mine tour. If you’re keen on mountain-biking or a longer tramp, budget two days – the trails are extensive and well worth the extra time. Reefton is also a convenient overnight stop between Greymouth and Nelson (via the Lewis Pass).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Punakaiki & the Pancake Rocks – The famous limestone formations and blowholes are an hour’s drive west, with the stunning Paparoa National Park for coastal walks.
- Greymouth – The West Coast’s largest town, 50 minutes away, offers the Shantytown heritage park, brewery tours, and the start of the TranzAlpine train journey.
- Lewis Pass & Hanmer Springs – Heading east, the Lewis Pass scenic highway leads to Hanmer Springs’ thermal pools and adventure activities (about 2.5 hours).
- Westport & the Buller Gorge – North of Reefton, Westport is a base for seal colonies, the Buller River jet-boating, and the stunning Heaphy Track trailhead.
