Watergates Gorge
Watergates Gorge is a hidden gem in the New England region of New South Wales, offering a dramatic landscape of sheer rhyolite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and lush temperate rainforest. Unlike the nearby and more famous Wollomombi Gorge, Watergates feels wilder and far less visited — a place where you can hear nothing but the rush of water and the calls of lyrebirds. The walking track is relatively short but steep, rewarding those who make the descent with an intimate view of the gorge from below, where the air is cool and mossy.
Highlights & What to See
- Watergates Falls: A multi-tiered waterfall that plunges into a deep pool, especially impressive after rain — perfect for a refreshing (if chilly) dip.
- Rhyolite Cliffs: The gorge walls are composed of ancient volcanic rock, streaked with orange and grey lichen, creating a striking backdrop for photos.
- Rainforest Walk: The track descends through a pocket of cool temperate rainforest with tree ferns, sassafras, and moss-covered boulders; keep an eye out for satin bowerbirds.
- Lookout Platform: At the top of the gorge, a small fenced lookout offers a vertiginous view of the waterfall plunging into the chasm.
- Birdwatching: The area is home to lyrebirds, king parrots, and crimson rosellas; early morning is best for sightings.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can easily see the gorge in 1–2 hours, including the 20-minute walk down to the base and time to swim or picnic. However, if you're a keen photographer or birdwatcher, allow half a day to fully soak in the atmosphere. The track is steep and can be slippery after rain, so go slowly. Combine it with a visit to nearby Wollomombi Gorge for a full day of spectacular gorges.
