Watergates Gorge

Watergates Gorge is a hidden gem in the New England region of New South Wales, offering a dramatic landscape of sheer rhyolite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and lush temperate rainforest. Unlike the nearby and more famous Wollomombi Gorge, Watergates feels wilder and far less visited — a place where you can hear nothing but the rush of water and the calls of lyrebirds. The walking track is relatively short but steep, rewarding those who make the descent with an intimate view of the gorge from below, where the air is cool and mossy.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

You can easily see the gorge in 1–2 hours, including the 20-minute walk down to the base and time to swim or picnic. However, if you're a keen photographer or birdwatcher, allow half a day to fully soak in the atmosphere. The track is steep and can be slippery after rain, so go slowly. Combine it with a visit to nearby Wollomombi Gorge for a full day of spectacular gorges.
