Varirata National Park
Perched on the Sogeri Plateau just 45 minutes from Port Moresby, Varirata National Park is Papua New Guinea's first national park and a lush escape into the country's extraordinary biodiversity. This 1,063-hectare reserve offers a rare chance to experience the island's iconic birdlife, including the dazzling Raggiana bird-of-paradise, all within a landscape of mossy rainforest, eucalypt woodlands, and sweeping views over the Owen Stanley Ranges. Whether you're a dedicated birder or a traveller seeking a peaceful nature fix, Varirata delivers an authentic PNG wilderness experience without requiring a multi-day expedition.
Highlights & What to See
- Bird-of-paradise watching — Varirata is one of the best places in PNG to see the Raggiana bird-of-paradise in the wild. Visit early morning (6–8am) for the best chance of spotting males performing their elaborate courtship displays from a dedicated viewing platform.
- Lookout points — Several cleared viewpoints along the main road offer panoramic vistas across the Sogeri Plateau, the distant Kokoda Track mountains, and, on clear days, the Coral Sea. The main lookout is an easy stroll from the entrance.
- Rainforest walks — A network of well-maintained trails (30 minutes to 2 hours) winds through primary and secondary forest, past towering klinkii pines and tree ferns. The Bird Walk and the Loop Trail are the most rewarding for wildlife.
- Picnic and camping areas — Designated spots with basic facilities (tables, fire pits) are scattered through the park, making it a favourite weekend getaway for locals. Camping is permitted with a permit from the park office.
- Cultural connection — The park is on traditional land of the Koitabu people; local guides can be hired at the entrance to share stories about bush foods, medicinal plants, and the area's significance.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day at Varirata, arriving around 6am for prime birding and leaving by midday. If you're keen to hike all the trails and enjoy a relaxed picnic, plan for a full day (6–8 hours). Campers should allow at least one night to experience the dawn chorus. The park is easily combined with a morning in Port Moresby — it's just a 45-minute drive on a sealed road, though the last 5 km are gravel and can be rough after rain.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Port Moresby — PNG's capital is the gateway to Varirata; visit the National Museum & Art Gallery, Parliament House, and the Kokoda Track Memorial before or after your park trip.
- Kokoda Track — The start of the famous WWII trail at Owers' Corner is a 30-minute drive from Varirata. Even if you're not trekking, the viewpoint and memorial are worth a stop.
- Sogeri Plateau — The surrounding plateau offers rolling tea plantations, WWII relics (such as the Bomana War Cemetery), and the chance to visit local villages.
- Bomana War Cemetery — A beautifully maintained Commonwealth war cemetery 20 minutes from Port Moresby, honouring soldiers who died during the Kokoda Campaign.
- Moresby coastal villages — Combine your nature day with a cultural visit to traditional villages like Hanuabada, known for their stilt houses and vibrant community life.
