Ueles, a tiny village in the Northern Rivers hinterland, feels like a secret the rest of the world hasn’t quite discovered. Tucked among rolling green hills and macadamia orchards, it offers a serene slice of rural Australian life with a creative, community-driven spirit. The air smells of damp earth and eucalyptus, and the main street – if you can call it that – is more about friendly waves than traffic lights.
Highlights & What to See
- Ueles Community Hall & Markets – The heart of the village, hosting monthly markets where locals sell homemade preserves, artisan crafts and fresh produce. It’s a great spot to chat with farmers and pick up a jar of bush-tucker honey.
- Rocky Creek Dam – A short drive away, this tranquil dam is perfect for a picnic, a paddle in a kayak, or a gentle walk along the water’s edge. Keep an eye out for wallabies at dusk.
- Macadamia Nut Plantations – The region is famous for its macadamias, and several farms offer tastings and orchard tours. Don’t miss the chance to try roasted, salted nuts straight from the tree.
- Nightcap National Park – Just north, this World Heritage-listed rainforest boasts towering strangler figs, crystal-clear swimming holes (like Protesters Falls) and excellent birdwatching – listen for the whipbird’s crack.
- Ueles General Store – A classic country store with a surprisingly good coffee machine and homemade banana bread. Grab a takeaway and sit on the verandah to watch the world go by.
Suggested Time to Spend
Ueles itself is small – you can see the entire village in an hour. But to soak up its slow pace and explore the surrounding nature, plan for a half-day. Combine a morning at the markets (if it’s a market day) with an afternoon swim at Rocky Creek Dam or a short rainforest walk. If you’re self-driving, it works well as a lunch stop en route between Byron Bay and the Border Ranges.
