Tooma is a tiny, historic settlement tucked into the upper reaches of the Snowy Mountains, where the Tooma River meets the Murray River. It's a gateway to wild alpine landscapes and a quiet base for exploring the western side of Kosciuszko National Park. With a population of barely a handful, Tooma offers genuine solitude, gold-rush history, and access to some of the most pristine wilderness in New South Wales.
Highlights & What to See
- Tooma River – Crystal-clear waters perfect for trout fishing, kayaking, and summer swimming. The river is also the start of the iconic Tooma Dam, part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme.
- Tooma Dam – A 20-minute walk from the village, this impressive earth-fill dam offers picnic spots and views over the reservoir. The dam wall is a testament to post-war engineering.
- Historic Tooma Hall & Cemetery – The small wooden hall and the cemetery with graves dating back to the 1860s whisper tales of the gold-rush era and early settlers.
- Kosciuszko National Park (western edge) – Access the park via the Tooma Road for remote bushwalking, horse riding, and 4WD tracks. The park's high-country trails offer wildflower displays in spring and spectacular autumn colours.
- Self-drive Snowy Mountains circuit – Tooma is a perfect overnight stop on the loop from Khancoban to Tumbarumba, taking in the Alpine Way and the Murray River valley.
Suggested Time to Spend
Tooma is a quick stop rather than a destination. Spend an hour to stretch your legs, visit the dam and cemetery, and take photos. If you're into fishing or bushwalking, plan a half-day to explore the river and nearby trails. Most travellers pass through on the Khancoban–Tumbarumba route, so allow 20–30 minutes for a break. Overnight stays are limited – there are no commercial accommodations, only a basic campsite or the historic Tooma Hall (by arrangement).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Khancoban – 30 km south, a larger town with motels, a pub, and access to the Snowy Mountains Scheme's visitor centre.
- Tumbarumba – 40 km north, known for its cool-climate wineries, the Tumbarumba to Rosewood Rail Trail, and the annual Tumbafest.
- Cabramurra – Australia's highest town, 50 km east, with skiing in winter and panoramic views of the main range.
- Murray River headwaters – Explore the Murray 1 and 2 power stations near Khancoban, and the remote fishing spots along the upper Murray.
- Kosciuszko National Park – Full-day walks from Tooma Road to the Grey Mare Range or the Tumut Pond area, with stunning alpine scenery.
