Thunderbolts Way is a spectacular 230-kilometre driving route through the rugged New England region of New South Wales, connecting the towns of Gloucester and Walcha. Named after the bushranger Captain Thunderbolt, this road winds through dense rainforests, past dramatic gorges, and over the Great Dividing Range, offering travellers a genuine taste of Australia's wild interior. It's a road less travelled, perfect for those seeking solitude, stunning landscapes, and a dash of outlaw history.
Highlights & What to See
- Gloucester River & Bucketts Way: Start in Gloucester, a charming town at the foot of the Bucketts mountain range. Take a short walk along the Gloucester River or explore the historic main street before hitting the road.
- Barrington Tops National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage-listed wilderness of ancient rainforests, alpine plateaus, and cascading waterfalls. Stop at the Gloucester Tops lookout for panoramic views.
- Polblue Swamp: A serene alpine wetland on the Barrington Tops plateau, perfect for a picnic and spotting native birds.
- Nowendoc River: The road follows this pristine river through deep gorges; pull over at one of the many rest areas to soak in the tranquillity.
- Walcha: The northern terminus, known for its bronze sculptures, colonial architecture, and the nearby Oxley Wild Rivers National Park with its dramatic waterfalls like Apsley Falls.
- Bushranger History: Captain Thunderbolt (Frederick Ward) roamed this area in the 1860s. Keep an eye out for interpretive signs and the Thunderbolts Way memorial near Nowendoc.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least a full day to drive the entire route without rushing, stopping for walks, photos, and meals. For a more immersive experience, plan two days: overnight in Nowendoc or at a farm stay to fully appreciate the changing landscapes and starry night skies. The road is sealed but winding, so allow 3–4 hours pure driving time.
