Dorrigo National Park is a lush, ancient rainforest in northern New South Wales, part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. Just an hour's drive from Coffs Harbour, it offers a serene escape into a world of towering trees, cascading waterfalls, and rich birdlife. The park's cool, misty atmosphere and well-maintained walking tracks make it a must-visit for nature lovers and hikers.
Highlights & What to See
- Skywalk Lookout – A short, wheelchair-accessible boardwalk that takes you above the rainforest canopy, offering panoramic views of the valley and the sea on clear days.
- Crystal Shower Falls Walk – A 2.6 km loop through ancient Antarctic beech trees to a stunning waterfall you can walk behind. The sound of the falls and the cool spray are unforgettable.
- Never Never Rainforest Walk – An easy 1 km boardwalk loop through dense rainforest with interpretive signs about the flora and fauna, including giant stinging trees and red cedar.
- Wonga Walk – A more challenging 6.5 km track that descends into the valley, passing several waterfalls and offering a chance to spot pademelons and lyrebirds.
- Birdwatching – Dorrigo is a hotspot for birds like the regent bowerbird, paradise riflebird, and wompoo fruit-dove. Bring binoculars and listen for their calls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors can experience the park's highlights in a half-day (3–4 hours). Arrive early to enjoy the Skywalk at sunrise, then tackle the Crystal Shower Falls or Never Never Walk. If you have a full day, combine the Wonga Walk with a picnic at the picnic area near the visitor centre. The park is best visited from spring to autumn when the weather is mild and the waterfalls are flowing.
