Perched at the mouth of the Shoalhaven River, this sleepy coastal village on the New South Wales South Coast is a gateway to unspoilt beaches, lush bushland, and a laidback holiday vibe. With the ocean on one side and the river on the other, Shoalhaven Heads is perfect for swimming, fishing, kayaking, and long walks along seven-mile beach. It’s also the southern end of the popular Kiama–Shoalhaven drive, making it an ideal stop on a coastal road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days is ideal to soak up the coastal atmosphere. Spend a day exploring Seven Mile Beach and the river mouth, then dedicate a day to the hinterland towns of Berry and Kangaroo Valley. If you’re on a road trip between Sydney and Melbourne, an overnight stop lets you catch a sunset over the ocean and a morning walk on the beach.
