Riflelsee
Set amid the rugged beauty of Australia's Northern Rivers region, Riflelsee is a serene lake destination that feels a world away from the coast's surf crowds. The crystal-clear waters are framed by lush eucalypt forest and rolling hills, creating a perfect setting for swimming, kayaking, or simply unwinding on the grassy shore. This is a place where the pace slows down, and the only soundtrack is birdsong and the gentle lapping of water.
Highlights & What to See
- Riflelsee Lake: The centerpiece is a pristine, spring-fed lake with excellent water quality. Take a refreshing dip, paddle a kayak or SUP, or picnic on the western shore for afternoon shade.
- Bushwalking Trails: Several short trails wind through the surrounding forest, offering glimpses of local birdlife and wildflowers. The 2 km Lakeside Loop is an easy walk with rewarding views.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for eastern grey kangaroos grazing at dawn and dusk, and listen for the distinctive call of the laughing kookaburra. The lake is also home to platypus – early morning or late afternoon are the best times to spot them.
- Stargazing: Far from city lights, the night sky here is spectacular. Bring a blanket and lie back to take in the Milky Way.
