Stretching from the rainforest escarpment of the Border Ranges to the coastal sands of Ballina, the Richmond River Valley is a lush, laid-back slice of northern New South Wales. This is a region where dairy farms, macadamia orchards and sugar cane fields unfurl beneath a big sky, and the river itself is the lifeblood – perfect for kayaking, fishing or simply watching the sunset from a riverbank pub. The valley’s small towns – Lismore, Casino, Kyogle – each have a distinct character, and the surrounding national parks hide ancient volcanoes and World Heritage-listed wilderness.
Highlights & What to See
- Nightcap National Park – Hike through subtropical rainforest to the magnificent Minyon Falls, a 100-metre plunge into a rocky gorge. The lookout is breathtaking, and the walk down to the plunge pool is a must-do.
- Rock Valley Homestead – A beautifully restored 1840s farmstead near Alstonville, offering a glimpse into early settler life, with gardens, farm animals and a café serving local produce.
- Lismore – The valley’s cultural hub, with a vibrant arts scene, the Northern Rivers Conservatorium, and excellent farmers’ markets (check out the Saturday market for local cheeses, honey and macadamias).
- Kyogle – A charming timber town with a historic main street, the Kyogle Markets (held monthly), and easy access to the Border Ranges National Park for rainforest walks and birdwatching.
- Richmond River Canoeing – Paddle the river from Casino to Lismore, past cattle pastures and river gums, spotting kingfishers and maybe a platypus. Hire a canoe from local operators.
- Broadwater National Park – Coastal dunes, heathland and quiet beaches south of Ballina, with walking trails and whale watching in winter.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the Richmond River Valley at least two to three days to do it justice. Spend a day in Lismore exploring markets and galleries, then dedicate a day to the national parks – combine Nightcap and Border Ranges for a full day of rainforest walks. A third day could be spent canoeing the river or visiting Rock Valley Homestead. If you’re self-driving, the valley is a relaxing two-day detour between Byron Bay and the Gold Coast hinterland.
