Richmond River Valley

Stretching from the rainforest escarpment of the Border Ranges to the coastal sands of Ballina, the Richmond River Valley is a lush, laid-back slice of northern New South Wales. This is a region where dairy farms, macadamia orchards and sugar cane fields unfurl beneath a big sky, and the river itself is the lifeblood – perfect for kayaking, fishing or simply watching the sunset from a riverbank pub. The valley’s small towns – Lismore, Casino, Kyogle – each have a distinct character, and the surrounding national parks hide ancient volcanoes and World Heritage-listed wilderness.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give the Richmond River Valley at least two to three days to do it justice. Spend a day in Lismore exploring markets and galleries, then dedicate a day to the national parks – combine Nightcap and Border Ranges for a full day of rainforest walks. A third day could be spent canoeing the river or visiting Rock Valley Homestead. If you’re self-driving, the valley is a relaxing two-day detour between Byron Bay and the Gold Coast hinterland.
