Região dos Lagos

Stretching along the stunning coastline of Rio de Janeiro state, the Região dos Lagos (Lakes Region) is a sun-drenched playground of turquoise lagoons, white-sand beaches, and charming colonial towns. This is where Cariocas escape the city heat, and savvy international travellers come for world-class kitesurfing, fresh seafood, and a laid-back beach culture that feels a world away from the frenzy of Copacabana. Whether you're chasing perfect waves, exploring historic salt pans, or simply soaking up the vibrant energy of Búzios, this region delivers a quintessentially Brazilian coastal experience.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least 4–5 days to do the region justice. Base yourself in Búzios for 2 nights to explore its beaches and nightlife, then move to Arraial do Cabo for 2 nights to dive and boat-hop. Add an extra day for Cabo Frio's historic centre and the salt pans. If you're a kitesurfer, allocate 3 days to Lagoa de Araruama. A self-drive itinerary is ideal, as distances are short (30–90 minutes between towns) and the coastal scenery is spectacular.
