Just a two-hour drive from Rio de Janeiro, Cabo Frio is a sun-drenched coastal town where turquoise waters meet white sand dunes and a lively colonial centre hums with beachside energy. This is the Costa do Sol’s crown jewel — a place that blends Brazilian beach culture with a dash of history and a serious seafood scene. Perfect for a relaxed escape, Cabo Frio offers some of the best beaches in the state, a charming historic core, and easy access to nearby lagoons and islands.
Highlights & What to See
- Praia do Forte – The town’s most iconic beach, with calm, crystalline waters ideal for swimming and stand-up paddleboarding. Backed by dunes and the 17th-century Fort São Mateus, it’s a postcard-perfect spot for a full day of sun and sea.
- Historic Centre – Wander the cobblestone streets around the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, a striking white church from 1615. The colonial architecture houses art galleries, craft shops and cosy cafés serving strong Brazilian coffee.
- Praia das Conchas – A quieter, shell-strewn beach framed by rocky cliffs and calm, emerald pools. It’s a favourite for snorkelling and watching the sunset with a caipirinha from a beach bar.
- Ilha do Papagaio – Take a boat trip to this island reserve, where pristine beaches and hiking trails offer panoramic views of the Atlantic. Keep an eye out for sea turtles and dolphins.
- Lagoa de Araruama – The largest hypersaline lagoon in the world, perfect for windsurfing, kitesurfing and kayaking. The calm, warm waters are also great for a float after a day on the ocean beaches.
Suggested Time to Spend
Three to four days is ideal to soak up Cabo Frio’s beaches, explore its historic centre and venture to the lagoon and islands. Spend your first day on Praia do Forte and the old town, dedicate a second to Praia das Conchas and a boat trip to Ilha do Papagaio, and use a third day for water sports on Lagoa de Araruama. If you have a fourth day, consider a day trip to the neighbouring town of Búzios for its chic beaches and lively nightlife.
