Região dos Lagos
Stretching along the stunning coastline of Rio de Janeiro state, the Região dos Lagos (Lakes Region) is a sun-drenched playground of turquoise lagoons, white-sand beaches, and charming colonial towns. This is where Cariocas escape the city heat, and savvy international travellers come for world-class kitesurfing, fresh seafood, and a laid-back beach culture that feels a world away from the frenzy of Copacabana. Whether you're chasing perfect waves, exploring historic salt pans, or simply soaking up the vibrant energy of Búzios, this region delivers a quintessentially Brazilian coastal experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Búzios – The crown jewel: a peninsula of 23 beaches, each with its own personality, from the lively Praia do Canto to the secluded Ferradura. Stroll the cobbled Rua das Pedras for boutiques, bars, and people-watching.
- Lagoa de Araruama – South America's largest hypersaline lagoon, ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing, with calm, warm waters and steady winds.
- Cabo Frio – Explore the historic Forte São Mateus and the pristine stretch of Praia do Forte, where fine white sand meets clear, cool Atlantic waters.
- Praia do Farol de Cabo Frio – A breathtaking, untouched beach on a protected peninsula, accessible only by boat or a 4x4 track; a true wild paradise.
- Arraial do Cabo – Known as the 'Diving Capital' of Brazil, with crystal-clear waters, dramatic cliffs, and boat tours to Gruta do Amor and Pontal do Atalaia.
- Salinas de São Pedro – Centuries-old salt pans near Cabo Frio, offering a unique landscape of geometric white mounds and flamingos – a photographer's dream.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least 4–5 days to do the region justice. Base yourself in Búzios for 2 nights to explore its beaches and nightlife, then move to Arraial do Cabo for 2 nights to dive and boat-hop. Add an extra day for Cabo Frio's historic centre and the salt pans. If you're a kitesurfer, allocate 3 days to Lagoa de Araruama. A self-drive itinerary is ideal, as distances are short (30–90 minutes between towns) and the coastal scenery is spectacular.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
