Puerto De Las Nieves is a sleepy, sun-bleached fishing village on the rugged north coast of Gran Canaria. With its black-sand beach, traditional Canarian houses, and the dramatic silhouette of the Risco de Faneque cliffs, this is a place where time seems to slow. The main draw is the laid-back atmosphere, fresh seafood, and the proximity to one of the island's most spectacular natural viewpoints.
Highlights & What to See
- Risco de Faneque: One of the highest sea cliffs in the world, plunging over 1,000 metres into the Atlantic. The viewpoint (Mirador del Risco de Faneque) offers jaw-dropping panoramas along the coast.
- Playa de Puerto de las Nieves: A small, volcanic black-sand beach sheltered by the harbour walls. Perfect for a quick dip or a sunbathe on the dark sand.
- Iglesia de San Pedro: A modest whitewashed church overlooking the main square, with a charming cobbled plaza where locals gather for evening strolls.
- Fresh seafood at the harbour: Several family-run restaurants serve just-caught fish, octopus, and the local speciality, sancocho canario (salted fish with mojo sauces). Grab a table on the terrace with sea views.
- Puerto de las Nieves promenade: A short, palm-fringed walk along the waterfront, dotted with benches and a small pier where fishing boats bob.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to soak up the village's charm: wander the streets, dip your toes in the sea, and enjoy a leisurely seafood lunch. Combine it with a visit to the Risco de Faneque viewpoint (10 minutes' drive) for a full morning or afternoon outing. If you're a keen photographer, aim for late afternoon when the cliffs catch the golden light.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Agaete: The neighbouring town (5 km) with a lively port, a pebble beach (Playa de las Nieves), and the start of the ferry to Tenerife. Explore its old quarter and the natural pools of Los Charcones.
- Valle de Agaete: A lush, terraced valley inland, famous for coffee plantations and the striking Tamadaba Natural Park. Drive up for hiking trails and pine forests.
- Gáldar: The former capital of Gran Canaria, 12 km east, with the impressive Cueva Pintada archaeological museum and a historic town centre.
- Mirador del Balcón: Another stunning viewpoint near the village of La Aldea de San Nicolás, offering vertiginous views over the coast.
