Parco Nazionale Della Majella, a rugged wilderness of limestone peaks and deep gorges in Italy's Abruzzo region, is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers. Its dramatic landscapes, sculpted by glaciers and rivers, harbour rare wildlife like the Apennine wolf and golden eagle. This is a place where ancient hermitages cling to cliffs and trattorie serve hearty mountain fare — a raw, authentic slice of Italy far from the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Monte Amaro: At 2793 m, the park's highest peak rewards trekkers with panoramic views over the Adriatic and the Apennines. The ascent from Fonte Romana is a classic day hike.
- Hermitage of Santo Spirito a Majella: A stunning 11th-century monastery built into a cliff face, reachable via a scenic walk. The frescoes and peaceful atmosphere are unforgettable.
- Gole di Celano: A dramatic limestone canyon carved by the La Foce river. Follow the suspension bridge trail for vertiginous views and spotting peregrine falcons.
- Valle dell'Orfento: A lush valley with crystal-clear streams and ancient beech forests. The Sentiero del Lupo (Wolf Trail) offers chances to see wildlife and waterfalls.
- Caramanico Terme: A charming spa town at the park's edge, perfect for soaking in thermal pools after a day's hiking. Sample local pecorino cheese and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wine.
- Badia Morronese: A historic abbey near Sulmona, once home to Pope Celestine V. Its cloisters and library are a peaceful detour.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least three to four days to explore the park's highlights. Use two days for a major hike (like Monte Amaro) and a day each for the hermitages and gorges. If you're self-driving, base yourself in Sulmona or Caramanico Terme; both have good accommodation and restaurants. For a whirlwind visit, one full day can cover the Hermitage of Santo Spirito and Gole di Celano, but you'll miss the park's deeper wilderness.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Sulmona: A historic town known for its confetti (sugared almonds) and Roman aqueduct. Great for an afternoon stroll and a gelato.
- Roccaraso: A ski resort in winter, but in summer it's a base for hiking in the nearby Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.
- L'Aquila: The region's capital, rebuilt after the 2009 earthquake, with a beautiful medieval centre and the stunning Basilica of San Bernardino.
- Costa dei Trabocchi: The Abruzzo coast, about an hour away, known for its unique fishing piers (trabocchi) and seafood restaurants. Combine with a beach day.
- Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise: Italy's oldest national park, offering more hiking, bears, and the picturesque town of Pescasseroli. A scenic drive from Majella.
