Nymboida is a tiny, off-the-radar locality in northern New South Wales, best known for its wild and scenic Nymboida River. This is a place for paddlers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a genuine slice of Australian bush without the crowds. The surrounding Nymboida National Park and nearby state forests offer deep gorges, granite outcrops, and abundant birdlife. It’s a perfect stop for self-drive travellers on the Gwydir Highway between Grafton and Glen Innes, or as a detour from the Waterfall Way.
Highlights & What to See
- Nymboida River – A premier white-water kayaking and canoeing destination, especially after rain. Even if you’re not paddling, the river scenery is stunning, with clear pools and granite boulders ideal for a swim.
- Nymboida National Park – Explore the park’s rugged wilderness on short walks like the Nymboida Lookout Walk (2 km return) offering panoramic views over the river valley. Keep an eye out for wallabies and lyrebirds.
- Nymboida Canoe Centre – A hub for river trips and camping. Even if you’re not taking a guided trip, the centre has a café and basic supplies, and the riverside campground is a lovely spot to pitch a tent.
- Chaelundi Falls – A spectacular multi-tiered waterfall in nearby Chaelundi State Forest, accessible via a 4WD track. The walk to the base is short but steep, and the pool at the bottom is perfect for a refreshing dip.
- Gwydir Highway Scenic Drive – The road through Nymboida is flanked by dense eucalypt forest and offers frequent pull-offs for river views. It’s especially beautiful in spring when wildflowers bloom.
Suggested Time to Spend
Nymboida is a destination best experienced as a half-day stop or an overnight stay. If you’re kayaking, plan for a full day on the river. For a relaxed visit, allow 2–3 hours to walk the lookout track, have a picnic by the river, and perhaps dip your toes in. Camping overnight at the Canoe Centre or in the national park lets you enjoy the peaceful bush atmosphere at dawn and dusk. Most travellers combine Nymboida with other attractions along the Gwydir Highway or Waterfall Way.
