Deep in Wollemi National Park, Newnes Historic Site is a fascinating ghost town that once boomed as an oil-shale mining settlement in the early 20th century. Today, the crumbling ruins of retorts, kilns, and workers' cottages are slowly being reclaimed by the bush. It’s a hauntingly beautiful spot for history buffs, photographers, and anyone who loves a good ruin with a story—plus it’s a gateway to some of the best wilderness in New South Wales.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a half-day exploring the ruins and short walks, but to truly soak up the atmosphere and see the glow worms, plan an overnight stay. Arrive early in the afternoon to wander the site, then head to the tunnel at dusk. Next morning, take a longer hike into the pagoda country before driving out.
