Deep in Wollemi National Park, Newnes Historic Site is a fascinating ghost town that once boomed as an oil-shale mining settlement in the early 20th century. Today, the crumbling ruins of retorts, kilns, and workers' cottages are slowly being reclaimed by the bush. It’s a hauntingly beautiful spot for history buffs, photographers, and anyone who loves a good ruin with a story—plus it’s a gateway to some of the best wilderness in New South Wales.
Highlights & What to See
- Ruins of the Oil-Shale Works: Explore the eerie remains of the retorts and condensers that once processed kerosene—photogenic and full of industrial history.
- Newnes Village Walking Track: A short, easy loop that passes the old post office, school, and hotel foundations, with interpretive signs explaining life in the boom years.
- Wollemi National Park Lookouts: Drive or walk to nearby vantage points like the Pagoda Lookout for dramatic views over the Wolgan Valley’s sandstone pagodas.
- Glow Worm Tunnel: About 30 minutes’ drive away, this abandoned railway tunnel is home to thousands of glow worms—bring a torch and visit after dark for a magical experience.

Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day exploring the ruins and short walks, but to truly soak up the atmosphere and see the glow worms, plan an overnight stay.
